Tyra Grinvalsky, General Manager, Fitchburg

What is the best part about working for SwimWest every day?
Being able to spend time with the people I work with. SwimWest attracts some of the best people and it is hard not to be happy when you are around them. Also seeing all the kids have so much fun will put a smile on anyone’s face.

What do you believe makes you a great General Manager?
I like to lead by example so I am always working right alongside my employees. Working as a team is the best way to get everything done and enjoy it at the same time.

Share a childhood memory about your experience with swim lessons.
I was always so excited to get my “report card” at the end of a session. I’ve always enjoyed swimming and passing a level felt like a huge accomplishment.

What favorite memory do you have from working at Swim West?
There is one family with two kids and I was their first teacher at SwimWest. I always enjoyed teaching these two kids and eventually their mom asked me if I could provide private lessons for them. I have now known them for 7 years and have done private lessons with them for 5 years. It has been amazing to develop a relationship with this family and watch the kids grow and succeed.

Share a childhood memory when you were brave and overcame fear.
I was usually scared to start something new, at a new place or with new people. The first day of a new activity was secretly terrifying but I always did my best to not show it. I know now I definitely had the mentality of “fake it until you make it” and it worked for me because I never regretted trying something new.
