OUR STORY

One of only three Wisconsin swim schools for children approved by the United States Swim School Association, SwimWest offers a proven approach to water safety. We have set the standard for swim education from infants to adults with a progressive curriculum that grows as they learn.

IT STARTED WITH A GOAL

Owner, Karen Kittleson, launched her swim school, SwimWest, in 1990. Her approach centers strongly around water safety and her love for children. Deeply affected by the drowning death of her father years earlier, her goal has always been to have a world without drownings.

AN EARLY ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

After graduating with a degree in exercise physiology and sports management from University of Minnesota in 1989, Karen decided to throw herself into owning her own business. At that time, she was already teaching ‘learn to swim’ courses, so the choice to start a swim school seemed a natural fit. She admits that lots of sweat and tears went into the growing stages. Even though it wasn’t easy, it paid off. To date, SwimWest is proud to have trained over 100,000 students in two Dane County locations – Madison and Fitchburg.

A FUN APPROACH

Karen knows learning happens best when a student is having fun. That’s why at SwimWest, we seize the opportunity during swim classes to make learning playful and exciting. Before the student knows it, they’ve learned stroke fundamentals and how to be safer in and around the water all while having a great time.

OUR STORY CONTINUES

Through it all, we have developed confident swimmers at all levels. Our goal is the same today as it was when Karen first started SwimWest: to create happy swimmers while raising the standard for safer swimming in our community.
